The main rule
Put the marker where it fits (usually first or last) and use the indefinido for the finished action: Ayer hablé con Elena. / Hablé con Elena ayer. Three patterns to remember: hace + quantity for "ago" (hace dos años), pasado/a after the noun for "last" (la semana pasada), and el for days and dates (el lunes, el 3 de mayo).
The markers and what they mean
| English | Spanish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yesterday | ayer | Ayer hablé con mi jefa. |
| last night | anoche | Anoche vi una película. |
| the day before yesterday | anteayer (also antes de ayer) | Anteayer tuve clase. |
| last Monday | el lunes pasado | El lunes pasado estuve en casa de mi tía. |
| last week, month, year | la semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año pasado | La semana pasada hice un examen. |
| last weekend | el fin de semana pasado | El fin de semana pasado vine a Valencia. |
| two years ago | hace dos años | Hace dos años fui a Cuba. |
| in 2018, in May | en 2018, en mayo | En mayo empecé un trabajo nuevo. |
| on 3 May | el 3 de mayo | El 3 de mayo llegué a Lima. |
Pasado is an adjective, so it comes after the noun and agrees with it: la semana pasada, el mes pasado, el año pasado. Fin de semana is masculine because of fin, so it is el fin de semana pasado, never *el fin de semana pasada.
Where Spanish differs from English
English puts the quantity first: "two years ago". Spanish puts hace first: hace dos años, hace una semana, hace tres días. Hace never changes, whatever the number: hace dos años, not *hacen dos años. You can also say dos años atrás, with the same meaning, but hace is the everyday form. The marker can also go at the end: Fui a Cuba hace dos años.
Days and dates take el, not a preposition. "On Monday" is el lunes, not *en el lunes, and "on 3 May" is el 3 de mayo. Years and months take en: en 2018, en mayo, en mayo de 2019. "Last night" is one word, anoche, and "the day before yesterday" is anteayer.
The marker also decides the tense. With a closed past marker Spanish uses the indefinido everywhere. English "I have done" against "I did" does not map onto Spanish, so do not choose by it. With hoy, esta semana or este año, usage differs between Spain and Latin America, and the next topic deals with it.
Examples
- Ayer comí en un restaurante con mi hermana. Yesterday I had lunch in a restaurant with my sister.
- Anoche vi una serie con mis padres. Last night I watched a series with my parents.
- Anteayer tuve una reunión en la oficina. The day before yesterday I had a meeting at the office.
- El lunes pasado hablé con el médico. Last Monday I spoke to the doctor.
- La semana pasada estuve enfermo. Last week I was ill.
- Hace dos años vine a Madrid por trabajo. Two years ago I came to Madrid for work.
- En 2018 fui a Perú con mi familia. In 2018 I went to Peru with my family.

- El 3 de mayo hice un viaje a Sevilla. On 3 May I went on a trip to Seville.
Habit now or event then
Markers of habit in the present, such as normalmente, todos los días and los lunes, go with the present tense. A closed past marker goes with the indefinido. You often see both in one sentence: Normalmente como en casa, pero ayer comí en un restaurante.
Be careful with el lunes, el sábado or en mayo on their own: they can point to the past or to the future, and the verb tells you which. El lunes fui al médico is past, El lunes voy al médico is the future. Add pasado (el lunes pasado) when you want to be clear.
Telling a story in order
Use primero for the start, luego or después for the middle, and al final for the end. Luego and después mean the same here, so use either; más tarde (later) works too. For the end you can also hear finalmente and por último. For example: Primero llegué al hotel, luego puse la ropa en el armario y al final hice la cena.
Read the marker first
When you build a sentence about the past, pick the marker first and let it choose the verb. If it is a point in the finished past (ayer, hace tres días, en 2018), write the indefinido. If it is todos los días or normalmente in a sentence about now, write the present.
