La regola in breve
Aggettivo corto: -er e the -est (tall - taller - the tallest). Aggettivo lungo: more e the most (expensive - more expensive - the most expensive).
| Cosa fai | Aggettivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|---|
| aggiungi -er / -est | tall, old, cheap, fast | taller, older, cheaper, faster | the tallest, the oldest, the cheapest, the fastest |
| se finisce in -e, aggiungi -r / -st | nice, large, safe | nicer, larger, safer | the nicest, the largest, the safest |
| raddoppi la consonante finale | big, hot, thin, sad | bigger, hotter, thinner, sadder | the biggest, the hottest, the thinnest, the saddest |
| consonante + y: la y diventa i | easy, happy, busy, funny | easier, happier, busier, funnier | the easiest, the happiest, the busiest, the funniest |
Aggettivi lunghi: more e the most
| Aggettivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| expensive | more expensive | the most expensive |
| interesting | more interesting | the most interesting |
| beautiful | more beautiful | the most beautiful |
| comfortable | more comfortable | the most comfortable |
Gli aggettivi di tre sillabe o più usano more / the most.
Forme irregolari
| Aggettivo | Comparativo | Superlativo |
|---|---|---|
| good | better | the best |
| bad | worse | the worst |
| far | further / farther | the furthest / the farthest |
Esempi
- My sister is older than me. Mia sorella è più grande di me.
- This phone is more expensive than that one. Questo telefono è più caro di quello.
- Tomorrow will be colder than today. Domani farà più freddo di oggi.
- The book was better than the film. Il libro era migliore del film.
- Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.
- Giulia is the youngest in our family.
- Yesterday was the worst day of the week.
- Kate is as tall as her mother. Kate è alta come sua madre.
- The bus is not as fast as the train.
Than: confrontare due cose
Il comparativo va quasi sempre insieme a than: He is taller than his father. Dopo than puoi usare me, him, her: She is older than me.
The + superlativo: in e of
Il superlativo sceglie uno all’interno di un gruppo e vuole the davanti. Se il gruppo è un luogo o una comunità al singolare si usa in: in the world, in our class, in my family, in Italy. Se segue un numero, all o un plurale si usa of: of all, of the three, of my friends. Con l’aggettivo possessivo l’articolo sparisce: my best friend, our biggest problem. In italiano invece diciamo «il mio migliore amico», e il calco *the my best friend è un errore molto frequente.
As ... as: uguaglianza
Per dire che due cose sono uguali (il comparativo di uguaglianza, «così ... come» o «tanto ... quanto») si usa as + aggettivo + as: Kate is as tall as her mother. L’aggettivo non cambia. La negazione è not as ... as: The bus is not as fast as the train. Anche not so ... as è corretto. Nelle frasi affermative non si usa mai *so tall as né *as tall like.
Errori tipici
My brother is more tall than me.My brother is taller than me. Aggettivo corto: -er, non more (calco di «più alto»).This film is more good than that one. This film is better than that one. good ha la sua forma: better (non «più buono»).She is taller of me.She is taller than me. Il «di» del confronto è than, non of.She is the tallest of the class. She is the tallest in the class. Gruppo al singolare: in, non «della».She is tallest in the class. She is the tallest in the class. Come in «la più alta», serve l’articolo: the. This is the most good cafe. This is the best cafe. good - better - best.He is the my best friend. He is my best friend. Con my, our, her non si usa the.Kate is so tall as her mother.Kate is as tall as her mother. Nell’affermativa «così ... come» è as ... as.
Domande e risposte
Quelli lunghi usano more: more expensive, more interesting.
Better confronta due cose e va con than: This is better than that. The best sceglie una cosa in un gruppo: the best in the class.
Si dice further o farther?
Sono corrette entrambe: further e farther, the furthest e the farthest.
Of si usa con un numero, con all o con un plurale: of all, of the three.
Posso dire not so ... as?
Sì. The bus is not so fast as the train e The bus is not as fast as the train sono corrette entrambe.
Serve the in my best friend?
No. Il possessivo (my, our, her) prende il posto di the: my best friend, our biggest problem, diversamente dall’italiano «il mio migliore amico».
