La regola in breve
Un verbo irregolare non prende -ed, ma ha una forma di passato propria: go - went, see - saw, put - put. È la stessa per tutte le persone: I / she / they went. Solo be ha due forme: was (I, he, she, it) e were (you, we, they).
Be al passato: was e were

Cosa cambia rispetto all’italiano
Inoltre c’è l’imperfetto: «faceva freddo» e «era a casa» in inglese sono semplicemente It was cold e I was at home. Il soggetto va sempre detto: «Ieri è andato al mercato» si dice Yesterday he went to the market, e «Faceva freddo» si dice It was cold, mai «Was cold». Infine were vale per you, sia che tu dia del tu, del Lei o del voi. Negazioni e domande al passato arrivano negli argomenti successivi.
Esempi
- On Saturday we went to the market. Sabato siamo andati al mercato.
- She bought a new bag yesterday. Ieri ha comprato una borsa nuova.
- They ate pizza and drank juice.
- He wrote a long letter last week.
- Giulia read the book in two days.
- I slept for nine hours last night. Stanotte ho dormito nove ore.
- I was tired yesterday. Ieri ero stanco.
- They were at school on Monday. Lunedì erano a scuola.
- It was cold last night. La notte scorsa faceva freddo.
- There were two cars in the street.
Errori tipici
Yesterday I goed to school.Yesterday I went to school. Niente -ed: go - went (e buy - bought, non «buyed»).Yesterday I have bought a bag.Yesterday I bought a bag. Yesterday I am gone to school.Yesterday I went to school. Niente essere come ausiliare: went basta.Yesterday I were tired.Yesterday I was tired. Con I si usa was.Yesterday they was at home.Yesterday they were at home. Con they, we e you si usa were.Yesterday was very cold.Yesterday it was very cold. Il soggetto it non si omette.Yesterday went to the market.Yesterday I went to the market. Il soggetto va detto sempre.Yesterday I seen Tom.Yesterday I saw Tom. Qui serve saw, non seen.
Domande e risposte
Leggili ad alta voce e ripassali a giorni alterni.
Was o were con you?
Sempre were: You were late.
Si dice she went o she wents?
Si dice She went.
