| Soggetto | Affermativa | Negativa | Forma completa |
|---|---|---|---|
| I, you, we, they | We work here. | We don’t work here. | We do not work here. |
| he, she, it | She works here. | She doesn’t work here. | She does not work here. |
| più persone o cose: my parents, the shops | The shops open at nine. | The shops don’t open at nine. | The shops do not open at nine. |
| una persona o cosa: my brother, the bus | The bus stops here. | The bus doesn’t stop here. | The bus does not stop here. |
In inglese «I not like coffee» e «She not works here» sono sbagliate: serve l’ausiliare do o does con not, e la -s di she works passa a does: she doesn’t work. Inoltre in italiano si può omettere il soggetto («Non lavora la domenica»), mentre in inglese il soggetto è obbligatorio: He doesn’t work on Sundays, mai «Doesn’t work on Sundays».
Esempi
- I don’t eat meat. Non mangio carne.
- My parents don’t live in Rome. I miei genitori non abitano a Roma.
- He doesn’t speak French. Non parla francese.
- We don’t have a garden. Non abbiamo un giardino.
- The shop doesn’t open on Sundays. Il negozio non apre la domenica.
- My sister doesn’t like coffee. A mia sorella non piace il caffè.
- You don’t need a passport. Non hai bisogno del passaporto.
- It doesn’t snow here in winter. Qui d’inverno non nevica.
Don’t o doesn’t?
Dipende solo dal soggetto. Se il soggetto si può sostituire con he, she o it (Giulia, my brother, the dog, this bus), usa doesn’t. Se si può sostituire con I, you, we o they (Giulia and Marco, my parents, the children), usa don’t. Il verbo che segue è lo stesso in entrambi i casi: work, have, go, sempre senza -s.
Isn’t o doesn’t?
Not dopo am, is o are nega il verbo to be: I’m not tired, she isn’t a doctor. I don’t like tea, she doesn’t work. Per questo «She isn’t work» e «I don’t tired» sono sbagliate: o be + not, o do + not.
Doesn’t have, non doesn’t has
Nell’affermativa he, she e it vogliono has, ma nella negativa c’è solo doesn’t have: He has a bike, but he doesn’t have a car. Lo stesso vale per does → doesn’t do e goes → doesn’t go.
Errori tipici
I not like coffee.I don’t like coffee. In inglese non basta not da solo: serve do.She not works here. She doesn’t work here. Con he, she, it si usa doesn’t e il verbo perde la -s.Doesn’t work on Sundays. He doesn’t work on Sundays. Il soggetto non si omette. He doesn’t works on Fridays. He doesn’t work on Fridays. Dopo doesn’t il verbo resta senza -s.My brother doesn’t has a car.My brother doesn’t have a car. Dopo doesn’t, has diventa have.My parents doesn’t live here.My parents don’t live here. My parents equivale a they, quindi don’t.I don’t have hungry.I’m not hungry. Fame, freddo o sete si esprimono con be, non con have.
Domande e risposte
Doesn’t si usa con he, she, it e con una sola persona o cosa (my sister, the bus). Don’t si usa con I, you, we, they e con più persone o cose (my friends, the shops).
Perché la terminazione è già in does, quindi il verbo resta alla forma base: she works → she doesn’t work, he has → he doesn’t have.
Che differenza c’è tra isn’t e doesn’t?
Isn’t nega to be, quando segue un aggettivo, un nome o un luogo: he isn’t at home. Doesn’t nega tutti gli altri verbi: he doesn’t live here.
Come si dice «non ho» in inglese?
Con don’t have o doesn’t have: I don’t have a car, she doesn’t have a brother.
Si può dire do not e does not?
