Il verbo to be: am, is, are

To be è il primo verbo che ti serve in inglese: corrisponde a «essere» e ti permette di dire chi sei, dove sei e come stai: I am a student, she is at home, we are tired.

A1 Presente di base ·

La regola principale

Al presente to be ha tre forme: am solo con I, is con he, she, it e con una sola cosa, are con you, we, they e con più cose.

Le forme di to be

SoggettoAffermativaNegativaInterrogativa
II am / I'mI am not / I'm notAm I...?
he, she, itshe is / she'sshe is not / she isn'tIs she...?
you, we, theythey are / they'rethey are not / they aren'tAre they...?

Esempi

  • I am a teacher. Sono un insegnante.
  • My sister is at school. Mia sorella è a scuola.
  • It is cold today. Oggi fa freddo.
  • We are from Italy. Siamo italiani.
  • The keys are on the table. Le chiavi sono sul tavolo.
  • Are you tired? Sei stanco?
  • Marco is twenty-five. Marco ha venticinque anni.
  • I am hungry. Ho fame.

Età, fame, freddo: in inglese si usa to be

In inglese si usa to be: I am 25, I am hungry, I am cold, I am thirsty. Con «avere» (to have) la frase sarebbe sbagliata.

Negazione e domande

Per negare aggiungi not dopo am, is o are: she is not, oppure in forma breve she isn't. Per fare una domanda metti am, is o are prima del soggetto: you are → Are you...?

Risposte brevi

Alle domande con to be si risponde in modo breve: Is it cold? - Yes, it is. / No, it isn't.

Errori tipici

  • Is cold today. It is cold today. Il soggetto è obbligatorio in inglese.
  • I have 25 years. I am 25. L’età si dice con to be, non con to have.
  • I have hungry. I am hungry. Fame, sete, freddo: to be, non avere.
  • We is friends. We are friends. Con we, you, they sempre are.
  • You are a student? Are you a student? Nella domanda are va prima del soggetto.
  • Yes, it's. Yes, it is. La risposta breve affermativa non si contrae.

Domande e risposte

Quando si usa am, is o are?

Am solo con I. Is con he, she, it e con una sola persona o cosa (my brother, the film). Are con you, we, they e con più persone o cose (my parents, the keys).

Come si dice «ho fame» o «ho 25 anni» in inglese?

Con to be, non con to have: I am hungry, I am 25.

No. In inglese ogni frase ha un soggetto, quindi «Sono a casa» è I am at home e «Fa freddo» è It is cold.

Come si fa la negazione con to be?

Aggiungi not dopo la forma: I am not, she is not (isn't), they are not (aren't).

Come si fa una domanda con to be?

Metti am, is o are prima del soggetto: She is ready → Is she ready? Risposta breve: Yes, she is. / No, she isn't.
