La regola principale
In inglese si usa there is per una cosa o per un nome non numerabile (There is a bank, There is milk) e there are per più cose (There are two beds).
|---|---|---|---|
| una cosa, il latte | There is / There's a park. | There isn't a park. / There is no park. | Is there a park? |
| più cose | There are two parks. | There aren't any parks. / There are no parks. | Are there any parks? |
There is a bank near the station. La forma contratta there's esiste solo per is; per are non c’è forma breve.
Esempi
- There is a bank near the station. Vicino alla stazione c’è una banca.
- There are two windows in the kitchen. In cucina ci sono due finestre.
- There's milk in the fridge. In frigo c’è del latte.
- There are some apples on the table. Sul tavolo ci sono delle mele.
- There isn't a shop in my street.
- There aren't any eggs. Non ci sono uova.
- Is there a bus stop near here? C’è una fermata dell’autobus qui vicino?
- Are there any shops in your town? Ci sono negozi nella tua città?
Negazione e domande
Per negare aggiungi not (There isn't a lift, There aren't any chairs) oppure usa no al posto di a: There is no lift. In italiano la domanda ha lo stesso ordine dell’affermazione («C’è una banca?»); in inglese invece is o are passa davanti a there: Is there a bank? Are there two beds? Non dire *There is a bank near here?* con il solo tono di voce. Per chiedere quanti: How many beds are there?
Risposte brevi
Si risponde con there e il verbo: Is there a bank? - Yes, there is. / No, there isn't. Are there any shops? - Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
There is o it is, c’è o è
There is presenta qualcosa di nuovo: dice che esiste in un luogo. Quando ne hai già parlato, lo riprendi con it is o they are: There is a cafe near my house. It is small. Attenzione anche a «c’è» e «è»: «C’è una banca vicino alla stazione» è There is a bank near the station (cosa nuova, indefinita), ma «La banca è vicino alla stazione» è The bank is near the station (una banca precisa, già nota, senza there).
Errori tipici
There's two beds in the room. There are two beds in the room. Più cose: are. It is a bank near here. There is a bank near here. «C’è» non è it is: serve there is.Is a shop in my street. There is a shop in my street. Manca there: in inglese non si omette. There is a bank near here?Is there a bank near here? Nella domanda is va davanti a there.Have a park near here. There is a park near here. «C’è» non si traduce con have, ma con there is o there are. There is the bank near the station. (una banca precisa)The bank is near the station. Una cosa già nota (the) non si usa con there is.There aren't eggs. There aren't any eggs. Nella negativa di solito serve any (o no).
Domande e risposte
Come si dice «c’è» in inglese?
Con there is per una cosa o un nome non numerabile e con there are per più cose: There is a book on the table, There are two books on the table. «C’è» non si traduce con have.
Quando uso there is e quando there are?
Guarda il nome che viene dopo. Una cosa o qualcosa di non numerabile (a park, milk) vuole there is; più cose (two parks, some apples) vogliono there are.
Che differenza c’è tra there is e it is?
There is introduce qualcosa per la prima volta: There is a cafe near my house. It is si usa dopo per descrivere lo stesso posto: It is small.
Come si fa una domanda con there is?
Si mette is o are davanti a there: Is there a bank? Are there any shops? Risposta breve: Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
«C’è» è sempre there is, oppure a volte è «è»?
«C’è una banca» è There is a bank, ma «La banca è vicina» è The bank is near here. Con there is presenti qualcosa di nuovo; con is dici dov’è qualcosa che già conosci.
