Comprehensible input for Spanish reading is a menu, not a pile of famous books. Here is what just-above-you looks like at A1, A2, B1, and B2, how to test a page, and how to mix graded and authentic books so you keep going.
You search "comprehensible input Spanish" because you want a page you can actually read tonight. What you get is video binge hours, or a thin A1-C1 dump that parks Pobre Ana next to Cien años de soledad. Prestige next to a classroom novella. Twenty minutes later the page is fog, or you are bored. You quit.
You are not failing input. You opened the wrong plate.
Comprehensible input for Spanish reading is a menu by level, not a pile of famous books.
At A1-A2 you mostly stay on graded pages. At B1 you split last graded with a short authentic book and a known-story crutch. At B2 you mostly read authentic, and you keep a graded easy-day plate for when the page turns to fog.
Test i+1 on a random middle page. If you follow the story and look up about a word every sentence or two, stay. If it is fog, step down a band. Soft bands, not certificates. CI is one ingredient on the plate, not a fluency machine.

What does "just above you" look like on a Spanish page?
i+1 is not a fake score. It is a feel you can test in three minutes.
Open a random middle page, not the first page. First pages cheat with names and setup. Read for gist. Do you follow who did what?
Stay if you follow the story and look up about a word every sentence or two. That is the 80-95% feel, not a counted exam. Most of the page, not every word.
Step down a band if the page is fog: you lose the plot, or every line is a lookup.
Step up, or add authentic, if you understand everything and get bored.
The useful part: the page decides. Not a list. Not a certificate.

Read below your level or slightly above?
Some CI teachers say read below for pleasure. i+1 says slightly above. Do not pick a cult.
Both can be right on different nights. Stay if you follow the story. Drop a band if it is fog. Keep an easy-day plate when you are tired. That is the mix, not a contradiction.
Do I need a CEFR certificate first?
No. Soft bands are hedges, not official scores. A1 here means tiny word lists and a finishable story. B2 means you can take longer authentic pages if the test still holds. You do not need a paper from an exam board to pick tonight's plate.
What should you read at A1 vs A2 vs B1 vs B2?
A reading menu, not a 40-title dump. Each band is a plate: text types, two or three named examples, what is not yet on it. Soft bands only. Deep catalogs live on sister posts.

A1 - first pages, tiny word lists
Text types: TPRS / CI classroom novellas, A1 graded mini-novels, illustrated super-beginner, manga written for learners.
Two or three named plates, not a catalog. Pobre Ana / Pobre Ana moderna (Blaine Ray) is a ~300-word classroom staple. Finishable win, not literature. Mira Canion's easy readers (Fiesta fatal, El capibara con botas) are cognate-heavy and classroom-clear. Juan Fernández A1 (Hola Lola, Un hombre fascinante) or Paco Ardit A1 are learner novels you can finish in a sitting.
Why this plate: you can finish a whole story tonight. That is the A1 win.
Not yet: children's chapter books as the default, El Principito, anything sold as "your first novel."
First session: random middle page. Follow who did what? About one lookup every sentence or two? Stay. Fog? Shorter or earlier graded.

A2 - longer graded, still controlled
Text types: A2 graded novels, short-story collections with notes, late TPRS (Spanish 2), and very easy children's chapter books only after a sample page.
Juan Fernández A2 (La profe de español, Año nuevo, vida nueva) is still controlled, still a story. Olly Richards beginner shorts are often listed A1; more honestly they sit at strong A2. En busca de la entrada secreta (Ana Martín) shows up on Reddit beginner lists. Still a learner book.
Why this plate: same comfort as A1, more pages. You are building a finish habit, not hunting prestige.
Not yet: Papelucho and Manolito as default A2. Some lists put them early. Treat them as late A2 / B1 with help. El Principito is not default A2 homework.
First session: random middle page. If notes and plot both hold, stay. If every line is a lookup, step back to a shorter graded plate.
When you want a finishable mix rather than another learner title, the easiest Spanish books for A2-B1 owns that list.
B1 - last graded + first authentic
Text types: B1 graded, short vignette "real" books, known-story translations, light YA / juvenil, short novellas.
You need a split plate, not a sudden leap into a famous novel.
El Principito is the universal first authentic for many readers. Late A2-B1 on most lists. It is a children's classic, not YA. La casa en Mango Street (Cisneros) is short vignettes and a common first-real-book pick. Keep a last graded warm-up on the side: Juan Fernández B1 (Me voy o me quedo) or Paco Ardit B1.
Not yet / hedges: Aura (Fuentes) is short and often sold as easy B1. Literary, not classroom. Harry Potter 1 in Spanish is B1 with help, not A2. Names and magic vocab still pile up. Book-by-book hedges live on Harry Potter in Spanish by book. El príncipe de la niebla and the daily juvenil lane live on YA Spanish books at B1-B2. Do not rebuild that lane here.
First session: random middle page of the authentic pick. Follow the story? Stay. Fog? Last graded tonight. Try authentic again later.

B2 - volume + authentic mix
Text types: upper graded (Fernández B2, Ardit B2), contemporary page-turners, short literary, news or longform on topics you already know.
La sombra del viento is a frequent "first grown-up" rec. Treat it as a solid B2 / C1 stretch, not B1. Crónica de una muerte anunciada is short García Márquez and still literary. Juan Fernández B2 (Una chica triste) is the easy-day plate when authentic fog rises.
Why this plate: you can take longer authentic pages if the test still holds, and you keep an easy-day plate so you do not quit.
Not yet: Reina Roja and adult thrillers as the only CI path. Park those on modern Spanish bestsellers at B2. Cien años is not this plate. Como agua para chocolate is not default B1.
First session: random middle page. Mystery or plot gist must hold without a lookup on every line. If Cemetery prose is fog, keep Sombra as a later plate and eat short literary or upper graded tonight.
C1 glance - not this menu yet
Thin lists love a prestige dump: Cien años de soledad, Rayuela, Los detectives salvajes, Nada, Pedro Páramo. Excellent books. Off the menu for now. Cien años is not an A2 book and not a B1 book.
After the menu, pick a deep list if you need more titles: short stories by CEFR, free graded readers, the A2-B1 finishable mix, first real novels, or the YA / juvenil daily lane. This post stays on the menu.
Graded readers or authentic books: how do you mix them without quitting?
The method, not another catalog. Compelling can justify a slight stretch. It does not justify Cien años at A2.

A few short rules.
Compelling can justify a slight stretch. It does not justify Cien años at A2.
Hard + compelling can beat easy + boring. That is the Paco Ardit line in plain words. Still run the page test.
A known-story translation is a B1 crutch, not the whole plate. Harry Potter 1 is not A2.
Adult readers do not have to wait 300-600 listening hours if the page is i+1. Listening is a different plate. More on that below.

What if I keep quitting?
The plate is too heavy or too bland. Step down a band, or swap prestige for a finishable graded / short authentic. If the problem is the calendar, not the book, the 30-day comprehensible input plan owns habit mechanics. This post will not write you a day-by-day schedule.

Excellent books. Wrong plate for this band. Later plates, not shame. Fame is not a CEFR score.

Cien años fails the page test for almost every A2 and B1 reader. You lose the plot in the names and the time jumps. That is fog, not "a bit of stretch."
HP1 in Spanish can work as a B1 known-story crutch. It is still not easy A2. Hedges by book live on the Harry Potter Spanish CEFR guide. Sombra waits until the B2 page test holds; the graduation notes sit with first real novels. Adult page-turners stay on modern Spanish bestsellers at B2.
How is this different from Dreaming Spanish or listening-only CI?

Their culture often delays reading until about 300-600 hours. That is a listening-app habit, not a law. Adults who like books can start when the page passes the i+1 test.
